FLORIDA-- Some states, including Florida, are trying to determine if Russian military intelligence targeted local election offices last year.
That comes as election officials thwarted a separate attack on their own system.
Eight states used the voter registration software that was said to be hacked.
Investigators say hackers used information taken from the company to send malicious emails to 122 local election officials, including at least five Florida counties.
Meanwhile, election workers in Collier County thwarted an attack on their system.
Officials say they received this suspicious email right before the November general election.
The email looked like it came from the company which manages voter registration for the county.
No information was stolen and the results of last year's election were not affected by this incident.
"We back up our voter registration daily, so anything that were to happen to that we would have an audit of what the time before that and what the record were supposed to be,” said county elections supervisor Trish Robertson. “This had nothing to do with our election equipment."
The origin of this fishing email is still under investigation.
Employees are trained to spot and report suspicious activity.
