Troopers: Fatality in Port Charlotte crash caused by medical emergency

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Troopers are investigating a fatal crash on Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte early Wednesday.

It happened shorty after 4 a.m. near the intersection with Cochran Boulevard.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 70-year-old Steven Slack of North Port was driving south on Tamiami Trail when he experienced a medical emergency. His pickup truck then drifted left across the northbound lanes and onto the shoulder of the road, where it hit a stop sign and an electrical box in the parking lot of the Chick-fil-A.

Slack was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no road blockage in the area.
