Mom killed, baby injured in Port Charlotte crash

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Troopers say a Pittsburgh woman was killed Friday morning when she was hit by an SUV while pushing her child in a stroller.

The crash at 7:10 AM on Appleton Boulevard near the intersection with Baystate Drive, in the South Gulf Cove area of Port Charlotte.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 35-year-old Mariah Klinefelter was pushing her 5-month-old boy in a stroller eastbound along the edge of the road.  There are no sidewalks in the area.

They were approached by an SUV driven by 55-year-old Allen Peterson of Port Charlotte, also eastbound on Appleton.  The front right of the truck hit Klinefelter and pushed both of them onto the grass shoulder of the road.

Klinefelter was taken to Englewood Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.  Her son was flown to Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg with serious injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.  No charges have been announced.

Klinefelter was a labor and employment attorney at the Pittsburgh-area branch of Steptoe & Johnson since last year.
