CAPE CORAL, Fla. (AP) - Authorities are assessing the damage after a tornado with winds up to 135 miles per hour touched down in Cape Coral.

Cape Coral Police spokesman Dana Coston couldn't say how many homes were damaged when the tornado hit Saturday night, but said a roughly 12-square mile area was affected. No one was killed and only a few minor injuries were reported.

He said numerous homes were damaged and numerous power lines were down. At one point, nearly 10,000 were without power but that number was down to about 1,500.

The Red Cross opened a shelter for residents unable to return home.
