CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The Lee County School District says Island Coast High School experienced a sprinkler system failure which led to flooding and an early dismissal on Thursday.
According to the school's principal, all students and staff were safely evacuated.
Students were dismissed at noon. At that time the maintenance teams were out on campus surveying the potential damage.
The school will reopen tomorrow with only three rooms on campus unavailable to students.
A note did go out to parents letting them know Friday school would be in session.
Dear Island Coast families,
This is a follow-up message to this morning’s notification regarding early dismissal due to the failure of the sprinkler system. Our maintenance team has been on campus for the last few hours surveying potential damage. After a thorough review, only three rooms cannot be mitigated and will remain temporarily closed for repairs. The remainder of the school is safe and ready to welcome students back to school tomorrow.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigated this unexpected event. I am incredibly proud of my staff for their swift action in ensuring student safety and maintaining order during the evacuation. I also want to extend my gratitude to our local first responders for their prompt assistance and support.
We look forward to seeing your students back on campus tomorrow. Thank you once again for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Principal Michelle Cort
