FORT MYERS, Fla. — Thanksgiving marks one of the busiest travel days of the year.
Today travelers packed R-W-S airport anxious to get to their holiday destinations.
According to AAA, more than 50-million people are expected to travel 55 miles or more this holiday season.
AAA predicts this year's turkey day will become the second most traveled day on record.
The Lee County Port Authority provides tips on how to beat the rush and travel smart this holiday season.
- arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to departure
- use 1-75 to avoid heavy traffic instead of local roadways.
- make sure to place all items larger than a cell phone in a bin for security check.
Fox 4 spoke to people at the airport about their travel experience.
Julie Morrison, arrived from Philadelphia today at R-S-W airport. She tells us that she’s excited to get this holiday season started.
“Visiting family, my parents live here, a little vacation as well. it’s nice to get out of the cold,” says Julie Morrison.
Travelers were presently surprised to see the airport had less traffic compared to those around the country.
“This looks pretty empty compared to where we came from up north, so yup all good.”
There were very few delays today, with most planes departing on time and some even arriving early.
“We got straight threw, in and out”
Morrison says when it comes to her experience, this idea of today being a busy travel day may be overrated.
“Easiest travel I’ve ever had. I’ve traveled all my life, and it was no lines at the airport. I think everyone traveled yesterday,” says Morrison.
