Cape Coral Police say a terminally ill man started shooting at them when they arrived at his home.  An officer returned fire, sending the man back inside the house.

Once inside, officers heard a gunshot from within the house.  When officers made their way inside, officers found the man dead.

It happened in the early evening Thursday in the 4200 block of NW 12th Street in Cape Coral.  That's near the far western end of Yucatan Parkway off Old Burnt Store Road.

The Cape Coral Police Officer who fired the shot will be placed on administrative leave.  That's normal protocol when an officer fires his service weapon.

UPDATE (3/25) -- Detectives have identified the dead man as 66-year-old John Toles.  The investigation continues.
