6 injured, 4 of them children, in N. Port crash

NORTH PORT, Fla. -- Four children were injured but are expected to be okay after a collision with another car in North Port Sunday.

It happened just after 4pm at the intersection of Toledo Blade Boulevard and North Cranberry Boulevard.

According to North Port Police, a silver car crossed the intersection into the path of an SUV.  The collision sent the car into a wooded area. 

The car's driver, Valerie Nieves of Port Charlotte, sustained critical injuries and was taken to the trauma center at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

All five people in the SUV, including four children ages 3-6 years old, sustained minor injuries and were taken to North Port ER for treatment.

Police credit the proper use of restraints for them surviving the crash relatively unharmed.
