FORT WORTH, Texas — With a caravan of cars behind her, 93--year-old Opal Lee marched two-and-a-half miles in Fort Worth, Texas .
It took two and a half years for the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach slaves in Texas.
That's why Lee says she's marching.
Texas Senator John Cornyn was one of five senators who introduced legislation on Friday, June 19.
The proposal seeks to make the Juneteenth holiday a federally-recognized holiday.
Lee has also posted an online petition that she hopes will show Washington, D.C. how much the day means to so many Americans.
