A Ft. Myers man is charged with assault after an argument ended in gunfire.

Naples Police arrested 42-year-old Lernis Cornish Jr. of Ft. Myers and charged him with ashooting that occurred in Naples Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to the 1200 block of 5th Avenue North, between Goodlette-Frank Road and 13th Street North around 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses told investigators Cornish and 47-year-old Brian Battaglia were involved in an argument.  Cornish told police he went to his car and retrieved a gun to scare Battaglia.  During a scuffle, the gun went off, and Battaglia was struck in the torso.

"The victim was speaking to law enforcement after he was shot in the chest," said Naples Police Lt. Seth Finman.

Battaglia was taken to Lee Memorial hospital.  No one else was hurt in the shooting.
