CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Troopers are searching for a driver who critically injured a bicyclist and then took off Tuesday.
It happened at 5:15 pm on a rural section of Tamiami Trail south of Punta Gorda, about half a mile north of Oil Well Road.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a car swerved into the northbound bike lane, hitting the bicyclist. That person was thrown from the bike and wat taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The car then took off along Tamiami Trail. The car is described as a maroon or red four door, newer model passenger car with likely damage to the front right side.
