Bomb squad training likely causing disturbances

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Residents in northern Lee County have been contacting Fox 4 all morning with complaints about loud series of booms that are shaking houses.  It appears that training exercises in Charlotte County are the source.

Officials with Charlotte County Fire & EMS say that bomb squad training is taking place on Zemel Road.

That's in a rural area of southern Charlotte County, just north of the Charlotte-Lee county line.

Most of the sound complaints are coming from the areas of north Cape Coral, North Fort Myers, and Suncoast Estates.

Fox 4 spoke with Naval Air Station Key West, who say that they area conducting training exercises in the northern sections of their airspace, and that there is the possibility of sonic booms in the area.  However, they say their planes would not produce a series of multiple booms, as many residents are reporting.

There have been numerous other complaints in recent months of booms and shaking across Southwest Florida, usually attributed to sonic booms.
