Boys & Girls Club of Collier County hosts its annual ‘Day for Kids' event

More than 300 kids and parents spent Saturday afternoon celebrating ‘Day for Kids’ at the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. The free family festival is part of the Boys & Girls Club of America National Day for Children.

“We’re just excited to have them come and be happy, enjoy themselves and have a safe place,” said CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County Theresa Shaw.

The goal of this annual event is to encourage parents to spend more meaningful time with their children.

“The kids are happy, the adults are happy, it’s real positive,” said parent Rod Sealy.

There were games, food, crafts, a photo booth, face painting and bounce houses.

“A time where you can kind of just stop everything else we always put in our life to say, let’s make this a day we are together,” said BGCCC Unit Director Pam Edlund.

The BGCCC said it was happy with this year’s turnout and the family participation.

“I’ve seen families joining together to do a lot of family dancing because we have a DJ, to create and make puppets and I’ve seen them doing potato sack races. I’ve enjoyed watching them watching what their kids can do,” said Edlund.

The BGCCC said events like today also make them excited for the near future. The club is expanding in October to include kids and families in Immokalee. A new youth center is expected to be complete in the Fall of 2016.
