CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A very active scene overnight in Cape Coral as we're learning of an early-morning car burglary investigation that ended with an officer-involved shooting.

We just got word that one man is in custody, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.

Police were on the scene beginning around 1:15 AM Monday about  a stolen vehicle, vehicle burglary in progress near the 500 block of Tropicana Parkway West.  That's where a mobile command unit, large police presence, and police in tactical gear were all on the scene.

After officers and the K9 unit located the suspect, he got out of the stolen vehicle and fled on foot into a canal off NW 5th Place.

"At some point during the confrontation with the suspect in the water, back and forth with him, he presented a firearm at one of the officers on scene.  And officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries," said Sgt. Dana Coston.

As a matter of standard procedure, the involved Officer(s) will be placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the internal review of the shooting.

We are waiting for an update on the suspect's condition.

Crews will be on the scene the next several hours processing crime scenes and gathering evidence.

A spokesperson with the Cape Coral Police Department tells Fox 4 there is no danger to the public at large.

There have been more than 20 firearms stolen from vehicles and over 200 car burglaries in Cape Coral since February 1st.
