Cape Fire Dept. warns of dangers of hoverboards

Posted

They're being hailed as the holidays' hottest gift, and not just because they're flying off the shelves.

Some hoverboards are getting so hot they're exploding, and local fire officials are warning you of the dangers.

Managers at several local stores said hoverboards are tough to keep in stock, but some parents aren't buying anymore.

One mom said she returned her son's Christmas present after reading national headlines about the hoverboards bursting into flames.

An Alabama man said his hoverboard exploded right beneath his feet.

A New Orleans woman's home was destroyed after her son's hoverboard ignited while charging on his bed.

In Washington state, a hoverboard burst into flames at a mall kiosk.

Closer to home, a Boca Raton mom said her daughter's hoverboard exploded in their kitchen.

Our state is one of ten where hoverboard explosions have been reported, leaving folks in southwest Florida on edge.

"Very dangerous, very dangerous," parent Brad Peaks said.

His seven-year-old daughter Lela agreed.

"I would say don't try it! Return it back to the store! Get your money back! Because it will turn on fire," she said.

Lela said she used to want a hoverboard until she saw the videos of them on fire.

For families who decide to jump on board, the Cape Coral Fire Department has a warning.

"We just want to make sure as a popular gift this year, that they're used responsibly, and that everybody knows some of the hazards that can be associated with these," Division Chief Ryan Lamb said.

He said the department has received a number of injury reports linked to hoverboards, but no fires.

He does anticipate they may see some because of the hoverboard's surge in popularity.

They're a gadget so hot, even some first responders are buying them.

"I have people that work for the fire department that have recently gotten some of these hoverboards," Lamb said.

They know the risks, and so should you: Never leave your hoverboard charging unattended, and if your'e giving it as a gift, don't overcharge it then wrap it under the tree.

"That can add to a potential fire hazard," Lamb said.

If you are buying a hoverboard, Lamb said it's important to look out for a seal of an independent testing lab, which shows it's certified.

If you notice any leaking, excessive heat, smoke, or sparking, stop using the board immediately and call 9-1-1.
