Christmas crime spikes in Cape Coral

Posted
CAPE CORAL, FLA.- A string of break-ins in Cape Coral have left some living there with the holiday blues.

Andrew Smith lives on Northeast 14th Avenue and told Fox 4 he recently had a close call.

"It's been a very nice neighborhood till this week."

Earlier this week he said he woke up in the wee hours of the morning to people rummaging through his daughter's car. They had grabbed a watch, but dropped it when they saw him coming.

Sergeant Dana Coston told Fox 4, not everyone on the street was that lucky. He said it's usually teenagers committing the break-ins, but this may be a specific group.

"We're beginning to think this group may be tied to a string of several other auto burglaries in the area."

The best way to protect yourself? lock your car and keep valuables, and holiday gifts, out of your car.
