Residents on one Collier County Road said they are fed up with construction trucks speeding down their street, and that several pets have been killed in recent months. The neighbors live on Greenway Road, just north of U.S. 41 between Naples and Marco Island.
"Trucks pass by so fast," said Emily Castaneda, who said she has lived on Greenway Road all of her life. "It used to be a nice neighborhood where there was like, no traffic. And now it's...crazy."
Castaneda said that she thinks her Yorkie, Chispita, was hit and killed by one of the many trucks that constantly run up and down her street, using it as a construction entrance for the new Naples Reserve community nearby on U.S. 41. Chispita got away from Castaneda one day in November.
"While I was looking for her, I saw her golden fur in the distance," she said. "So I went towards it, and it was her."
Patty Bott drives on Greenway Road every day, and said she believes that the road isn't safe for the huge trucks to go any faster than 30 miles an hour - the posted limit.
"There are no sidewalks on this road, just big ditches," Bott said. "So there's not a lot of room to get out of the way."
"It's just a matter of time before it's a human life," she added.
Fox 4 reached out to iStar, the construction company for Naples Reserve, to se what they would do about any speeding truck drivers. They had not responded by Friday afternoon.
But Bott said that the Collier County Sheriff's Office and iStar have responded to their complaints.
"Deputies have been out here for the last several days writing tickets like you wouldn't believe," Bott said. "(And) the company has let go several (truck drivers) for excessive speed."
"I think it would be better if they just slow it down," she added.
