A contractor with a local design company was arrested and charged with stealing from the home he was working on.

Collier County deputies say Bryan Lestock stole $48,000 in jewelry, cash and other items from a home in the Vineyards section of Naples.

"It's  surprising that it happens here in Naples, but the world is getting worse and worse," said Joe Walton, who works nearby.

Deputies say Lestock stole the jewelry, which included gold earrings, while helping remodel a condo on Reserve Circle.  Investigators say he tried to sell the stolen loot at two different Naples pawn shops.

No one answered the door at Lestock's home Tuesday night.

The Collier Sheriff's office has some tips to help keep you safe when a contractor is working on your home.

You can verify whether a contractor is licensed by visiting the state of Florida's website.    You should secure all valuables, lock doors while contractors are in your home, especially in areas where they are not working.

Always be at home while a contractor is there.

"I will usually be at home or another person at the house," said Walton.

The victim in this case did get all her stolen items back.
