LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Governor DeSantis met with President Trump to discuss the state’s response to COVID-19.
As the states Safer-At-Home order is set to end on April 30th, DeSantis is scheduled to announce a plan to reopen Florida.

“DC, Maryland, New Jersey, NY, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, you name it Florida’s done better, ” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

Desantis says today’s coronavirus case numbers are far below original predictions.

“The predictions were dire, the predictions were that we would see hundreds of thousands of people hospitalized, and none of that ever materialized, ” said Lee County Commissioner Brian Hamman.

Commissioner Hamman serves on the governor’s task force, and says Phase 1, likely to start later this week, details guidelines provided by the federal government to reopen businesses in the state of Florida.

“It certainly looks like it would allow businesses and some restaurants to begin to operate with certain restrictions in place, ” said Hamman.

Commissioner Hamman says its time to get people back to work.
“Every paycheck is essential to that person who owns it, and we really have to get people working again, ” said Commissioner Brian Hamman.

As far as tourism dollars to boost the local economy, Hamman says there may be a long road to recovery.
“I definitely don’t think we are going to see the same amount of tourism or travelers that we’re used to here in Florida. I think a lot of people are scared to travel right now. ” said Commissioner Brian Hamman.
