Unemployed Floridians receive letters from DEO saying they need to send money back

CAPE CORAL, Fla – Fox 4 continues to track the latest when it comes to unemployment in Florida.

The latest debacle some claimants are experiencing is over letters they’ve received, saying they owe the Department of Economic Opportunity money because of overpayments.

That's not the only issue, either. As our sister station in Tampa reported, some claimants are even receiving letters addressed to them, but including other claimants personal information.

That was the case for claimant Jenifer Austin, who said she not only got a letter telling her to pay up, but also a second letter addressed to someone else, all in the same envelope.

Austin said the stranger's personal information including his address, the last four of his social security number, and the amount he owes, were all included.

Both letters came from the DEO. Austin’s said she owes $550 for overpayment. The other said the stranger owes more than $1,400.

“You guys are just dispensing money out not knowing who you’re dispensing money to and then you’re putting random people’s letters in other people’s mailboxes within the actual envelope,” said Austin.

She added that she's confident she'll be able to pay the money back. However, she worries that may not be the case for others who are struggling to get by.
