Dangerous New Guinea flatworm spreads to Sanibel

Posted

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A potentially deadly worm found recently in Cape Coral is now being spotted in other parts of Southwest Florida.

Officials on Sanibel are alerting people of the New Guinea flatworm, which some say they saw on the island.

The flatworm is an invasive species. It was discovered last year in Miami and most recently found in Cape Coral, as we reported in a Four in Your Corner story.

The worms may look harmless, but they can carry diseases like meningitis.

If you see one, report it to FWC by calling 1-888-IVE-GOT-1. You can also kill them by pouring boiling water on them.
