Posted

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A drunk driver who slammed into a South Cape Coral home Friday night got quite a surprise when a Good Samaritan who helped them was none other than Interim Chief of Police Dave Newlan.

Gregory Fischer, was driving his car, southbound on Skyline Boulevard, at a high rate of speed. Fischer drove through the stop sign at El Dorado Parkway and crashed into the front of a house on El Dorado Parkway West. Thankfully, the residents were not home, but there was significant damage to the house.

Chief Newlan, who was off duty at the time, was at a nearby residence and heard the crash. He and several neighbors in the immediate ares walked to the crash scene to assist. While at the scene, Chief Newlan ended up detaining Fischer until Patrol officers arrive.

Fischer, who could not perform  field sobriety evaluations, was arrested for DUI and DUI with property damage.
