Elderly Fort Myers couple carjacked at gunpoint

Posted

FORT MYERS, FLA.- The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a carjacking in Fort Myers after an elderly couple said their car was stolen at gunpoint.
Carol Nichol said she and her husband had just gotten home from the grocery store and parked their car in their driveway when a car pulled up behind them, a young man got out, pulled a gun, and took off with their golf minivan.

Her 81-year-old husband George was hospitalized with minor injuries.
This happened off McGregor Blvd on Sway Drive in Fort Myers, and it's left the neighborhood on edge.

"She was sitting down in the front yard, but he was laying flat on his back. And I saw his arm and his shoulder was bloody, and he had blood on the side of his face a little bit, too," neighbor Ken Kelsey said.
He thinks his neighbors were followed from the grocery store.

"They went down to the end of the road, turned around and came back, and that's when they jumped them," Kelsey said.
Carol said her husband has Parkinson's disease and was hospitalized with minor injuries.

She said the man who pulled the gun was young and well-dressed.
"It's sad. If I would have come in and seen them, I would have run them over. I would have done everything I could to protect them because that's ridiculous. They didn't do anything wrong. They're coming home! Really?" Kelsey said.

He said the men also got away with the couple's house keys, so they're afraid they will come back.
While Kelsey David he's distraught this happened across the street, he's not exactly surprised.

"We've been broken into once. They literally came into our bedroom one time and we caught them, and they ran out the back door. And then my truck has been broken into twice," he said.
Kelsey suggests streetlights, security cameras, or increased patrols on the dead end street.

He said the couple's gold minivan was found in the Harlem Heights area and a helicopter was searching the neighborhood for the people responsible, but at this time there have been no arrests made in this case.
If you have any information, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

"I hope they catch them. Those guys are cowards to something like that. They're cowards," Kelsey said.
