COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- A 78-year-old Naples man is dead and another person was seriously injured in a multiple-car crash on Golden Gate Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened on Golden Gate Boulevard at Northwest 21st Street shortly before 3 p.m.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a car driven by 17-year-old Christian Flores was attempting to pass another vehicle at a high rate of speed in the left westbound lane, but slower moving traffic forced Flores to swerve right, where his car hit another car in the right lane.

Due to its high speed, Flores' car continued between the westbound lanes and also hit a small SUV.  That vehicle was forced off the roadway, rotating and going airborne before stopping in the grass.

The SUV's driver, 78-year-old Joan Meyer, was seriously injured and taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.  A passenger in the SUV, 78-year-old Lee Meyer, was critically injured and taken to Physician's Regional, where he was pronounced dead.

The drivers of the other vehicles walked away with minor injuries.

Charges are pending further investigation.
