LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A fatal crash involving a school bus Friday morning resulted in one death and one injury, and completely blocked Buckingham Road.

The crash happened around 5:40 a.m. near where Buckingham Road splits with Orange River Road, not far from the FGCU Buckingham campus.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the crash involved a Lee County School Bus and a passenger vehicle.  Troopers say 34-year-old Juan Carlos Amaya was driving a car north on Buckingham approaching a left curve in the road.  Amaya's car began to rotate and slid into the path of the southbound school bus.

Amaya was pronounced dead at the scene.  The bus driver is being treated for minor injuries at Lee Momorial.  There were no children on the bus at the time.

Buckingham Road remained closed in both directions for several hours during the investigation, but has since fully reopened.

The crash was causing some delays in school bus routes in the area.  The district sent messages to the parents of students who we know are affected, but if parents have questions they can call their child’s school, or the transportation department at either 303-7400 or 303-5900.
