Fatal crash closes lanes of U.S. 17 in Charlotte

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Rescue crews responded to the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision on U.S. 17 east of Punta Gorda Monday.

According to Charlotte County EMS, the crash happened shortly before 3pm in the southbound lanes of U.S. 17 at Washington Loop Road.  Emergency responders arrived to find a pickup truck vs. a sedan with heavy damage to both vehicles.

Florida Highway Patrol says the driver of the car, 77-year-old Thomas Holloman of Yorktown, Indiana, attempted to turn left from Washington Loop onto U.S. 17 and drove into the path of the northbound pickup truck.

Holloman was pronounced dead at the scene, while three other passengers in his car were taken to area hospitals with injuries.  They have been identified as 78-year-old Sui Holloman of Yorktown, 86-year-old Linda Hee of Inverness, and 81-year-old Frederick Myers of Inverness.

The pickup truck's driver, 62-year-old Jose Martin Gaspar Matias of Fort Myers, was transported to a local facility with minor injuries. 

Florida Highway Patrol says no charges have been filed.
