CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A house fire in northwest Cape Coral Tuesday severely damaged a home and left one firefighter injured.

The fire happened in the 1400 block of NW 10th Terrace.  That's a few blocks north of Mariner High School.

"It was all blacked out and you could see the smoke leaking out the windows," said neighbor Jessica Tyre.

According to Cape Coral Fire, 4 dogs were rescued from the fire, which started in the garage and spread to the roof.

"There were fortunately no occupants home at the time but they did find 4 dogs that they were able to safely rescue," said Cape Coral Fire Department PIO Andrea Schuch.

The department said a lack of fire hydrants in the area made it difficult to fight the fire, but thanks to Pine Island thousands of gallons were brought to the scene. The two departments also began making use of canal water. The fire was eventually put out, but the home experienced extensive damage.

The Red Cross has now stepped in and will provide the family with temporary housing until repairs can be made to the home.
