Fishermen feeling the effects of red tide

Posted

PINE ISLAND, Fla. -- Red algae is still plaguing our pristine beaches, and it's likely the reason for respiratory problems among beach-goers and recent fish kills.

The latest concentration map just released by Florida Fish and Wildlife shows low to medium levels of red tide along Lee, Charlotte and Collier counties.  Florida Fish and Wildlife officers say that's a slight improvement compared to last week.

But Southwest Florida isn't out of the woods just yet, and many fisherman have noticed.  "It's just extreme..I have to run from it and spend hours and hours trying to get away from it," says Capt. Harvey Hamilton of Native Charters.
