Wildlife officials consider venomous snake ban

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Changes could be on the way for people who own snakes. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said they'll consider tighter rules for owning venomous reptiles. They could ban them all together.

This, after the recent escapes of two cobras. Last month, a deadly five foot cobra escaped from an East Lee County home in the Buckingham area. It was captured shortly after.

In October, an eight foot King Cobra was on the run for over a month in the Orlando area.

Wildlife officials want to increase inspections of people with permits for venomous reptiles or other conditional snake species. Wildlife stakeholders have been contacted for input. The agency will discuss their findings at an upcoming meeting in the spring.
