Fort Myers Beach homeless problem increases

Posted
FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. -- In the green waters of a canal on Fort Myers Beach, Lee County deputies retrieved the body of 50 year old Steven Louis Barnes Tuesday morning.
Barnes was known as one of the many transients who hangs out on a pier behind Topps grocery store on Estero Boulevard.

Patrick Graves and his family have seen their activity while staying at a vacation beach house. "They come and go, one or two and towards the end of the week now it's like five or six. In the morning you can hear them, at night you can hear them. They're disturbing, they're rowdy. They just kind of sit over there on that pier and drink."

Graves and his family aren't the only ones on Fort Myers Beach who have expressed concern with behavior of the homeless on the island.

Ken didn't want to go on TV or reveal his last name because he doesn't want to become a target of any transients staying on the beach. He's been living peacefully on one of the beaches side streets for years.

"I've actually seen, you know guys urinating on the side of buildings and their homeless and you know people don't need to see that."

He tells FOX4 behavior of the homeless can be disturbing to the islands tourist who like to relax.

"All they do is just bum money from people. And it's a nuisance."

I asked the Lee County Sheriff's Office about efforts to address the situation.

"I can't see where they are an overwhelming issue that we need to put any more resources towards other than what we already do for everybody their on fort Myers beach," said Matt McDaniel, a sergeant with the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

An autopsy performed found Barnes died from drowning.
