FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Braving the shave, and saving lives in the process. Hundreds of students at Florida Gulf Coast University took part in the sixth annual "St. Baldrick's Day" event Thursday.
More than a thousand supporters and spectators attended throughout the day as those who went under the razor helped raise awareness for pediatric cancer, as well as money for cancer research.
"St. Baldrick's focuses on the after effects of chemo, so I think that's really important. And that's one of the reasons I love it so much, because I've been affected by the after effects. So just seeing everyone out here supporting, it just warms my heart," says cancer survivor Rachel Goldenberg.
The event started back in 2011 as part of a civic-engagement course. Since then, it's raised more than $40,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, an international organization devoted to finding a cure for cancer.
