CAPE CORAL, Fla. — September is prostate cancer awareness month.
The prostate cancer foundation says 30-percent of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes, including eating better. Each day on Fox 4, we'll profile a superfood you can incorporate into your diet. The challenge is called the "Eat It To Beat It."
Today's superfood is the onion.
People in ancient Egypt worshipped onions.
They thought the circular shape and layers were a symbol of eternal life.
Scientists now know that onion is part of a family of vegetables that contain Organo-Sulphur compounds that prevent prostate cancer.
Onions are also known to lower cholesterol and hypertension.
You can eat onion cooked with other veggies or use them to kick up a fish dish.
Sautee onion slices with olive oil, put them in the bottom of a casserole dish, then layer fish filets on top.
Add seasoning and bake in the oven.
