FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Fort Myers Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide on Jackson Street in Fort Myers, Monday.

Neighbors woke up to numerous units and helicopters responded to the Pebble Court apartment complex in the area of Jackson Street and Maple Avenue around 6:10 a.m. A neighbor at the scene tells Fox 4's Samantha Sosa that they were evacuated from their apartment and that they saw a person's body on the ground.

They told Fox 4 it is a scene they know all too well. "Another shooting. That's the first thing that I thought of when I saw the police presence," said John Nichols, who was taking his morning walk.

One woman is confirmed dead, identified as 29-year-old Whitney Kugelman.

The suspected shooter was holed up in an apartment.  Negotiator teams were called to the scene to talk to the suspect.  "We tried making contact via cell-phone, we tried knocking on the doors, going through the windows, talking, and there was no contact," said Capt. Jim Mulligan.

Hours later, one gunshot was heard inside the apartment. SWAT officers entered the home to find the suspect dead. He has been identified as 40-year-old Michael Nesse.

Neighbors like Gregory Watts were sad to say shootings happen a couple of times a month in their area. "There's something going on all the time. You hear something all the time going on so, I jut stay in the house," he said.

He told us he want to see a change. He said Fort Myers Police and Lee County Sheriff's Deputies are actually very visible in the area. However, with a new police chief coming, he hopes to get to know officers who serve the community on a personal level. "I think if they know the people who live here more and interact with people n the community, I think it might help some."

Police say the situation appeared to be a domestic dispute turned tragic.

Streets in the area have since reopened.
