Hundreds gather to call for an end to violence

Posted

Youth and adults from 20 different churches gathered in Centennial Park Wednesday night for a vigil against violence.

"We are no long slaves to fear," pastor Will Hutcherson told the crowd following a concert featuring a Christian pop group.

Planning for the event began 8 weeks ago, following the shooting at Zombiecon in downtown Ft. Myers.  Organizers setting up Wednesday afternoon were unaware of the events in San Bernardino California, where dozens were killed during a mass shooting.

"Wow, that's sad to hear my hearts go out to the family," said Christopher Stirzel, of Next Level Church.

Stirzel says one of the reasons for holding the event was to steer the next generation of youth on a course of peace, not violence.

Sue Elliott, who's daughter is a Fort Myers Police officer attended the vigil.

"It scares me, especially with my daughter, the lack of respect, not just for police officers, but for people who protect us."

Church leaders haven't said whether another vigil will be held in the future.
