LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Data from the U.S Department of Justice shows Lee County has higher concentration of registered sex offenders than Collier or Charlotte Counties in Southwest Florida.

Fox 4 looked at 40 zip codes across the three counties, and discovered zip code 33901 in Fort Myers was home to a larger number of registered sex offenders.

The largest number was found living within three 3 miles of the Fort Myers Country Club. DOJ's national registry of sex offenders revealed a total of 117 near the country club along McGregor Boulevard.

"It's disturbing," said Peter Steenekemp, who was visiting the Fort Myers Country Club Wednesday.

He told Fox 4, he was unaware of the high number of sex offenders in the area.

"Not at all I mean it looks nice; nice golf course," said Steenekemp. "It doesn't look like a place you would have to look out for somebody like that," said Peter Steenekamp.

According to Parents for Megan's Law, an organization that tracks sex offenders, Florida has close to 69,000 registered sex offenders, the 3rd highest in the nation.

Lee County zip code 33905, also in Fort Myers, is home to 68 offenders. The area is home to the second largest amount in the county.

Over in Charlotte County, the top zip code is 33952 in Port Charlotte an area 108 sex offenders have settled down in.

In Collier County, the most registered offenders are living in Naples zip code 34112.

It's eye opening information following a recent string of so-called "stranger danger incidents" that southwest Florida residents like  peter believe is important to know.

"You don't want to hear anything like that anywhere to start with and I'm glad you're making people aware of what's going on," said Steenekamp.
