LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The bomb squad is investigating a suspicious device found at Lakeridge View Court in south Fort Myers.
The Lee County Sheriff's office says they found a "suspicious device" on the the 4th floor Lakeridge View Court shortly after 7a.m.
"A person went out of their way to put what looks real and could be a real device on the fourth floor of this condo building," Sheriff Carmine Marceno tells FOX 4's Elyse Chengery.
Deputies "disrupted" the device at an off-site location and said it is safe. They are still trying to determine if it is real or not.
Mike Barnes, a witness on scene said, “When I came in I was riding my bike and there was a plethora of police cars probably about 40. Two fire trucks and you know I had to walk around to get in to do my work. “Well what I’ve heard from the residents in the other building directly next to it and right below it they said that it was a pipe bomb.”
Sheriff Carmine Marceno, “We have someone who went out of their way to create a device that looks absolutely real and could be real.”
Around noon residents were coming back into the building.
Sheriff Marceno, “This is really a quiet place we don’t really have problems like this but listen it can happen anywhere so today it happens here but thankfully again everybody safe.”
Sheriff Marceno says once they identify a suspect they’re going to jail.
