Bullet bounces off street sign, hits Fort Myers home

A couple got a rude awakening early Wednesday morning when a bullet struck their house.

The husband and wife discovered gunpowder inside their Fort Myers bedroom as well as a hole on top of the closet.

"When you get bullets through your walls that's scary," said Nick Mazza, who watched sheriff deputies investigate the shooting.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office report says a bullet ricocheted off a street sign and into the side of the apartment.

"It's like shooting a gun in the air on the 4th of July," said Rick Williams, as he biked on the sidewalk next to the sign. "You don't know where that bullet is going to land," he added.

Williams was stunned someone would fire multiple gunshots in a residential area.

"Just really crazy that someone will shoot a gun in a neighborhood with houses all around," said Williams.

The couple inside the home were not harmed by the bullet. Williams hopes it doesn't take another bullet into the home for people to realize this isn't tolerated.

"I just wish people would think about doing things before they do it," he added.
