CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police have arrested a man on burglary charges after a couple says they came home to find the man in their yard.

36-year-old Jeffrey Hay is in the Lee County Jail on charges of burglary and petit theft.

According to Cape Coral Police, a couple arrived at their home on NE 5th Place around 2pm Wednesday to find a white pickup truck in their driveway, and a man standing in their back yard.

The residents witnessed the man, later identified as Hay, winding up an orange power cord, and noticed two of their gas cans in the bed of his truck. They confronted Hay, who explained he was "checking out the house."

Hay returned the gas cans and drove off, but not before the residents were able to photograph the license plate.

Officers were later able to locate Hay at his home and arrest him.
