CAPE CORAL, Fla. - City leaders voted unanimously Monday night to approve the funding for a new wave of police vehicles.
Cape Coral Police and the city ready to implement the School Resource Officer Program in all of the Purple Heart City's schools.
The city approved the funding of 23 police vehicles. The department said the decision will allow them to get the cars in, outfitted, and ready to patrol the streets.
Half of the funds that will pay for the officers in Cape Coral schools will come from city reserves. The other half will be paid for by the Lee County School District.
Cape Coral Police said they will be ready to serve as student resource officers in all area schools in August for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
The city also discussed a few other matters on their agenda.
They debated a new ordinance that would reduce the size of the Eagle Nest Management Zone. City staff explored reducing the distance development could occur from an active nest that would update the current United States Fish and Wildlife Service Bald Eagle Monitoring Guidelines .
However, members of wildlife groups voiced their concerns of the proposed reduction from 1100 feet to 660 feet.
The city decided to discuss the matter again on June 4th.
