CAPE CORAL, Fla. — After a unanimous vote by Cape Coral City Council members, Tetra Tech will assist with the design and engineering in the Utilities Extension Project in the Northeast quadrant.

Community members voiced their frustrations at Monday night's meeting, claiming this construction project is taking too long.

"Where I live, they even tore up 7th place which made it almost impossible for me to get home," said one community member.

The Utilities Extension Project has been underway for 19 months. It was approved by city council to extend water, sewer and irrigation services in the Northeast and Northwest quadrants of Cape Coral.

Mayor Joe Coviello said, "We need to improve the process because it's taking much too long."

He also said moving forward with this project, there will be more changes.

"We just need to break an area up into grids and make sure that we finish a piece before we move onto another piece. And it seems like we layed all the pipes in, but maybe we didn't come back and pave the roads as quickly as possible," Coviello said.

According to the city, this is also one of the largest Utility Extension Projects in the country, costing 400 million dollars.

The project manager tells 4 In Your Corner they are in the final stages.
