“Our major concern during the holidays is that everyone is safe,” said Master Sergeant Patrick O'Grady Public Affairs Officer with the Cape Coral Police Department.

Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady says the Cape Coral PD will begin their high visibility enforcement operations ensuring drivers are safe on the road this holiday season.

“There are Christmas parties everywhere ,holiday parties Hanukkah, whatever holiday you celebrate there are parties for it we want to make sure people aren’t driving impaired or causing crashes while they are impaired or killing people while they are drunk,” said O’Grady.

Adding the operations will take place mostly at night, saying they will be watching very closely for suspicious driving.

“We’ll be looking for people who are speeding, driving too closely, people who are driving carelessly, changing lanes and infecting other traffic, running red lights is a big one and just bad driving all together,” said O’Grady.

For the police department this is a major priority they understand many of us are enjoying time with loved ones but want to ensure we are doing it safely.

“It’s a priority because during the holidays a lot of people go to parties visit friends visit family and during these visit they may start drinking and once you start drinking and you think your good to drive you’re usually not,” said O’Grady.

He says their number one goal this holiday season is that traffic flow is safe for all drivers.

“We want to make sure that no one gets injured in a crash, nobody is driving impaired, nobody going to drive too fast ,or crazy and cause a crash and hurt someone so overall traffic safety is our number one goal,” said O’Grady.

O’Grady says the Cape Coral PD recommends that those who are planning to intake alcohol this holiday season need to make it a priority to have a designated driver, take a taxi, or use a ride share app like Lyft or Uber, to ensure your safety on the road and the safety of other traveling during the holidays.
