FORT MYERS, Fla — The State Fire Marshal says a car fire near Southwest Florida International Airport in April that burned more than 3,500 cars was an accident.
The Lee County Port Authority says the fire started in an area where rental cars are stored, east of Terminal Access Road. Multiple agencies responded to help put out the fire.
Investigators say the fire caused $100,000,000 worth of damage.
As a result of the investigation, arson, lightning, and smoking carelessly were ruled out as a cause of the fire.
The lead investigator noted that fire danger was high on April 3rd, and the area had high dry grass or vegetation.
