Car in canal prompts further concern from neighbors

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A car went into the canal near the intersection on Surfside Boulevard and Beach Parkway Tuesday evening. It's the third time an incident like this has occurred. Neighbors in the area told Four In Your Corner that they're hoping this most recent incident will spark a change in their neighborhood.

One of those neighbors is John Jarolz. He says he's spent quite a bit of time on the path near the canal and he is frustrated that more hasn't been done to prevent accidents like this one from happening.

“I travel this intersection all the time and it really upsets me that there’s no better way to keep people from going in to the canal“, he said

In 2015, a similar incident occurred when a young man drove into the canal. Even after emergency crews pulled him from the car, he died from his injuries. In 2012, a young woman's body was found inside her car after she went into the canal as well.

Jarolz and other neighbors like Phyllis Tompkins think more could be done to make sure these kind of incidents don't happen.

“If they added some streetlights, because it gets very dark in between the streetlights that we do have, that would help tremendously“, Tompkins told Four in Your Corner.

Efforts have been made by neighbors to pout a guardrail up at the intersection but no such measure has been successful.
