CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Distracted driving is a big problem in Southwest Florida, and now the Charlotte County Sheriff is making a personal plea to get drivers to pay attention to the road.

"Did you know that most of our motor vehicle crashes in this county are side-swipes or rear end collisions? These are more likely than not caused by distracted drivers. Please, put your phone down and don’t be a distracted driver. I’m Sheriff Bill Prummell. Please drive safely and responsibly. Drive alert, stay alive.”

The sheriff goes on to say with winter season approaching, the number of crashes goes up because there are more people on our roadways.
