LEHIGH ACRES, FL — A sixth-grader at Harns Marsh Middle school in Lehigh Acres is in trouble with the law after allegedly bringing a loaded gun to school.

With the alarming number of school shootings in the U-S, many are glad that administrators took the proper safety measures to control a potentially dangerous situation.

Fox 4 spoke with a student about this horrifying experience.

Sheriffs say it was students who alerted school administrators that their classmate was in possession of a firearm.

The school was immediately put on lockdown, while an employee quickly removed the suspect from his classroom as they searched for the weapon.

“I thought it was like a drill and then I realized it was real,” Ramsive Garcia-De La Torre.

Sheriff’s confirm a loaded gun was found in the student’s backpack. A seventh grade student, Ramsive Garcia-De La Torre says he couldn’t believe something like this was happening at his school.

“I was scared I was worried, I was like oh my god did that really just happen,” Ramsive Garcia-De La Torre.

Some parents say they received calls and emails from the school notifying them of the incident around 1:45 pm Friday afternoon, but others were left in the dark.

“I didn’t know, I didn’t know about that until you just knocked on my door and told me,” Danelys De La Torre.

This parent says that overall she appreciates the school’s quick and effective response.

“Since other students talked to the teacher, they communicated, they acted really fast. the gun was loaded so that was grateful that nothing worse happened,” said Danelys De La Torre.

The student was arrested and charged with a felony of possession of a firearm on school property.
