FORT MYERS, Fla -- Monday morning, The 13th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Junior UNITY breakfast took place at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.
The event is all about bringing together diverse members of the community as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned.
The event featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Ed Jackson, Jr., Chief Architect of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC. Jackson also authored the book “The King Memorial – Thousands Of Ideas, Bound By A Single Vision.”
The event also honored community members as 2020 “Keeper of the Dream” Honorees, people who exemplify the spirit of Dr. King.
“Unity to me is being able to work with one another in the community, making sure everyone is getting the assistance and help that they need," said Willitone Petit, the event organizer and Chapter President of the Xi Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Treasurer of the SWFL Alpha Educational & Leadership Foundation, Inc.
Petit added, "Unity is important to me because growing up with a single parent, it’s kind of difficult to be able to raise kids by yourself. It takes a village to raise a kid, and that’s what unity means to me is being able to have that village to help you.”
