FORT MYERS, Fla. — A collision between an SUV and another car turned fiery Wednesday night on Interstate 75 southbound near Alico Road.

Florida Highway Patrol says both vehicles caught on fire.

The southbound lanes on I-75 near Alico Road were closed and traffic was being diverted along the bypass lane.

Troopers say that shortly after 8 p.m., a car headed southbound became disabled near mile marker 128 and came to a stop in the inside traffic lane. Another car came to a stop behind the disabled car and activated their flashing hazard lights. That's when an SUV crashed into the rear of the 2nd car, which was pushed into the front car.

After the crash, the SUV caught fire, and the fire spread to the rear of the car they had hit.

The driver of the middle car, 26-year-old Ana Maria Arce Valdes of Naples, was taken to Lee Memorial in critical condition.

Charges are pending further investigation.
