Debate over removing Cape Coral City Manager

CAPE CORAL, Fla – Monday, Cape Coral council members will revisit whether or not to put City Manager John Szerlag on paid leave.

Szerlag is the center of several investigations.

He’s allegedly tied to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees to the IRS. An audit revealed that he knew about the incorrect tax filing before his raise approval but kept quiet. He's also in the hot seat because of claims he created a hostile work environment and tried to coerce an employee to do potentially illegal things several times.

Many Fox 4 viewers have chimed in and said he should be removed until the investigations are over, expressing concern about the fact that this all comes after council approved to extend his contract and grant him a raise in November.

Council voted Thursday to hire an outside agency to investigate. Council member Stout called that decision premature, and said she plans to vote against putting him on administrative leave.
