Dog dies in N. Ft. Myers house fire

FORT MYERS, Fla-- North Fort Myers Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire Tuesday morning. The woman was able to make it out alive, however her dog didn't survive.

"It sounded like a bomb," said neighbor Dorothy Eylders.

Neighbors said a loud noise could be heard throughout the trailer park community before one of the trailers went up in flames.

"I could hear Bonnie hollering for her dog and the dog barking," said neighbor Michael Bryar.

Bryar said he owns a trailer nearby and was doing some work on it when he first saw smoke fill the sky. He said he immediately jumped into action and ran inside the smoke-filled home to help his friend Bonnie.

Officials said the fire started around 10:00 a.m. at the 4000 block of Mailbox Ave. Within minutes 3 crews from N. Ft. Myers Fire Department were on scene battling flames.

"This room was totally engulfed here spreading back and all up here was just, I mean by this time almost to the floor with smoke," said Bryar.

Bryar was able to take Bonnie out the back door. However, he said the dog was stuck in the bedroom.

"We were both trying to get her dog and then finally the dog went silent"

Bryar credits firefighters for spending more than 10 minutes trying to revive Gracie, the dog.

As for Bonnie's trailer the fire department said it was an electrical fire that's now left her without photos, clothes and a home.

"She's a good person, this is nothing she deserved to have happened to her, she's one of the sweetest people," said Bryar.

Bryar is now organizing a fundraiser/BBQ benefit for Bonnie. It's scheduled for Sunday, May 7th at the clubhouse of the complex located at Foster Rd. in North Fort Myers.
