COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- One man died in Golden Gate Estates early Sunday morning when trooper say he crashed into a canal.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. on 24th Avenue NE.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving an SUV westbound and ran through a reflective sign marking the end of the road. The SUV exited the road and landed in a water-filled canal upside down.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity has not been released yet.

A similar crash happened in Golden Gate Estates in 2015, killing one passenger in a truck that crashed into a canal.

Last year, a similar crash in Lehigh Acres took the life of a man who's vehicle went airborne over a canal and crashed into the other side. And just last month in Lehigh Acres, another driver survived a jump over a canal before crashing into a parked vehicle.
